Stuff I want to do when the winter is over.

flowers-spring-large

Now, I am not usually the ‘wish your life away’ type. I believe in finding happiness in the exact place and time you’re in, because if you’re always waiting for the perfect circumstances in which to ‘be happy’, are you ever really happy? I am a big believer that happiness comes from within – it’s a choice we have to make a lot of the time. When times are shit, we have to dig deep and find the positives or the learning that can come from that circumstance. Yep. I’m that annoyingly positive person a lot of the time. The rest of the time I can be found moaning on Twitter (just in case you thought I was perfect – as if – bahaha).

But I’ll be honest with you. I am starting to feel a bit bloody annoyed by this whole winter time caper. And when I get this annoyed, I have to just mutter “this too shall pass” under my breath and make some plans to look forward to. I am so excited that the official start of spring is now less than a month away!

So what am I looking forward to?

Wearing short sleeved stuff and getting my pale legs out!

I was looking at some photos from last summer (cleaning out my phone – it’s a mess) and the photos of us as a family, wearing singlets and t-shirts in the sunshine felt really at odds with the cold weather and rain we’ve been experiencing of late. I actually realised I can’t remember what that feels like – to have your arms or legs out and not be freezing and uncomfortable! I am also excited to see the spring/summer fashion that is coming. While I’ve been happy enough in my ‘winter uniform’ of leggings and shirt dresses and jacket and boots, I am so ready to shake things up! That first day of pure sunshine and warmth, I am going to rock those pale legs like nobody else! Just remind me to shave them first haha.

Planting flowers with the Little Mister

Look, I’m no gardening expert – maybe I’m supposed to start now or I was supposed to start a couple of seasons ago, but I look forward to buying some simple potted colour with him and teach him how to look after them. He’s shown an interest in flowers (he’s been watching a lot of bee related TV shows for some reason) and I think we’ll have so much fun. Also, the kid is obsessed with watering cans. I can’t wait to get him outside watering my plants too (so not a green thumb over here) haha.

I’ve been holding off a little, because the weather has kind of limited our outdoors time. I want it to feel like a full experience for him where we can really take our time and go and tend to everything whenever we want to.

Running outdoors

I love my treadmill soooooooo much (if you read this blog regularly you might have guessed). I can walk on her for hours (she doesn’t mind), but I am finding it more mentally challenging to run on her. I need that scenery to look at and the freedom of seeing the open space ahead of me (and not a bedroom curtain). I can’t wait to grab a dog (not just any random dog – one of my dogs that lives with me haha) and get going. I think I’ll see a huge difference in my progress. I’m really excited.

Less illness!

Oh, I know you hear me on this one! Less illness for the Little Mister means more attendance at day care. That means more all important socialising and learning for him, more time for me to work and get things done at home, which means a little more moolah for our household and a bit more sanity for me!

Less illness for all of us, means I won’t be constantly fighting something off. Which means more energy to do things I need to check off my to-do lists. More motivation. More creativity. More productivity. More things we can go and do. Less risk of Mr Unprepared getting the man flu (because NOBODY wants that).

Less illness basically means less stir craziness. That’s the worst part. Honestly. Quarantine is not fun.

I can’t wait to make plans to socialise that don’t fall through, due to illness!!!

Making the outside of our house pretty

We have so many things we would like to do. We started the process before winter really hit, but lost a lot of momentum. We’re excited to finish painting the gutters (OK so not excited about the actual task but for the result) and to give the front of the house a makeover. I know we’ll be so relieved that it’s finally done. We’ve been talking about it for years. Not even kidding.

Of course there are so many little things I can do to work towards these tasks right now and I think that writing my list has inspired me. I could buy some nice clothes for spring/summer ahead of time (retail therapy) so I am not freaking out that I have nothing to wear the moment the weather gets nice. I could start researching flowers with the Little Mister and buy some of the things we’ll need (pots and little trowels and stuff) – it could be our little project. We might not be able to work on the outside of our house just yet, but I could look into upgrading our bedroom furniture and do some more indoor stuff in the meantime.

I have really lost my mojo lately and I am hoping I can channel my frustration and stir craziness into something positive. I need to find that fire inside me again! Winter really does a number on me every year.

What is your favourite season? Anything you’re looking forward to this spring?

Spring.

This post has been inspired by Fat Mum Slim’s September Photo a Day challenge x

unnamed

Today was full of blue sky and sunshine. We’ve had a few ‘fine’ days, but that’s not the same as a sunny day. The kind of day where the sun’s rays feel warm on your skin and burst through your windows, making your whole house bright.

I took this photo while I was outside with the Little Mister, giving him time on the swings (he’s obsessed).

The air felt different today. It actually felt more like spring than winter (we are lucky enough to get some sunny winter days but there’s usually a little chill in the air). Of course I wouldn’t really know what the weather is doing because my favourite weather app has decided to die on me. I get my obsession with the daily weather from my mum, I’m afraid. Now I don’t know what to wear each day and I have to look the forecast up on the Bureau of Meterology website, which is just so much more time consuming. It takes like an extra minute. First world problems.

I know it’s not just my phone playing up. How do I know this? Because my mum made sure it was a topic of discussion during a very important phone call with me. She is just as devastated, probably. She’s already been shopping around for other weather apps, but I doubt anything compares. She told me so.

Why can’t I just not care?

Look, I’ve been known to watch the rainfall radar before leaving home, in order to determine whether I’ll need an umbrella or not. Most people just pack one anyway or wing it. But not me. I have to know. There’s a thrill in timing everything just right and avoiding a shower. I think I’ve said too much. It’s quite possible that there is something very wrong with me – thanks, Mum.

Once when I was a kid, I pranked my weather obsessed mother by recording a ‘live’ weather update onto a VHS tape (yep sure did because I’m old) so that obviously it wasn’t current anymore. I played it at a random time on a different day, while she was in the room, making sure I talked really loud about something unrelated over the top of it. As predicted, my mum shut down the whole household in order to stare intently at the weather report.

“SHHHHHHHHHH. THE WEATHER’S ON! I WANT TO SEE THIS.”

LOL. I got her good.

OK, so my pranks aren’t always that awesome. Shut up.

Anyway, I tell you that story, just so you know what I’ve been dealing with.

So take a moment and let us pray that my weather app restores itself soon. End this madness. Right this wrong. Think of the children. My mother’s children. Or just oldest child. Me.

OMG. I wasn’t even drunk when I wrote this.

Signing off.

Stuff to love this spring.

I don’t know about where you are in the world, but over here I have been thoroughly enjoying amazing bursts of winter sunshine. Gosh, I love that Vitamin D. I actually wake up giddy when I see the sun out. I don’t know if this is all one big tease before the rains come back or if it’s truly the beginning of an early spring, but it is beautiful. It has got me so excited and inspired. I don’t want to see grey and black anymore!

Here are some of the things I am excited about for this spring/summer:

Neon coloured nails:

I used to think that neon was kind of tacky, but when applied on well shaped nails in block colours? Divine! I can have a bit of youth on my fingernails without looking ridiculous (can anyone say mutton dressed as lamb?) and I can’t wait to buy ALL THE COLOURS.

Bright lips:

I always love a good red lip, but I’m really into the idea of trying some pink and orange hues. A bold lip is really in right now and I love that everyone is getting adventurous. While the models pictured above are blonde and well…modelly and I am not, I would love to find the right  shades of pink and orange for my warm skin tone. I love the way a bright lip always makes me feel confident and polished. Like I’ve finished my look. It dresses you up instantly. Also, lipstick doesn’t care how big you are (and let’s face it I am carrying a few extra kilos – oops). It will always fit and make you feel great!

Gorgeous sandals/flats:

Galibelle

I am in love with the Galibelle brand right now and I just ordered the sandals above! The cool thing? Those straps with the beautiful butterfly like design are all detachable and swappable! I am so stoked because I am going to be wearing all three colours (plus a black one) this coming summer! I love that I can swap the straps to match my outfits. Also? The straps come in small, medium and large which is amazing news for my broad feet (I’m a medium FYI). Some dear friends have brought the brand (which is Brazilian) to Australia and you can find out more on their Facebook page. These are seriously heaven sent because I can never find summer sandals that are both attractive and fit my short, broad feet (because of the designs I imagine they would be just as heavenly for a slim footed person too – magic). I am not being paid or sponsored in any way to promote this (and have not been approached), but I genuinely am in love. Usually I hate when friends try to sell me stuff but this is not one of those times. You do not know how long I have been wearing ugly sandals because that was all I could get. We’re talking YEARS. YEARS! It shouldn’t be that hard, shoe makers. It really shouldn’t. I am beyond excited.

Not wearing stockings/tights/sleeves/jackets if I don’t want to:

Seriously. I want to go out and not feel like a freak because my legs are bare (in clothing of an appropriate and tasteful length of course haha) or I don’t have a jacket on. If there’s anything that annoys me, it’s winter clothing. I’m not a winter person. I do not do winter clothing. I feel frumpy in too many layers (I think my height and my current weight do not help my cause). I feel like jackets/blazers etc never fit me quite right (I have narrow shoulders but I’m bigger everywhere else and sleeves are always too voluminous or long). I hate trousers, because of muffin top (and yes I have tried every kind of style and taken every piece of anti-muffin top advice and it still doesn’t seem right – except for ONE pair of pants from Target that I daren’t ever wreck). I wreck stockings and tights constantly, despite having worn them successfully all throughout high school. Oh, and most of my shoes are peep toes and while I know that they sell tights with no toes just for that reason, I am never convinced I can pull them off.

I also loathe the passive aggressive comment, “Aren’t you cold in that outfit?”

I’m always, “What? What are you saying? Are you saying I’m slutty because I’m not cold? Are you saying I’ve made a very bad decision?”

*head explodes thus keeping me warm*

So I do look forward to leaving home in nothing but the one layer of clothing. Legs out, just doing the whole walking around thing.

Play time:

I just love the fun that can be had in the sunshine. I look forward to beach time, playground adventures around the neighbourhood, long family walks, and checking out the local markets on the foreshore on a Sunday. Sitting out in the backyard having a quiet beer/cider, listening to music and watching the Little Mister play. I can’t wait until it becomes more of a regular thing 🙂

What are you looking forward to this spring? x
