A messy girl’s guide to cleaning up your side of the bathroom.

I know this will shock you, but I am not a domestic goddess. And by ‘shock you’ I mean, ‘probably not going to surprise you in the slightest if you even vaguely know me’.

I have a very busy brain and I can lose focus easily. Sometimes this means that my organisation skills suffer a lot little. I’ve had years of practice being me, so I have overcome a lot of these issues by planning better and making things easier for myself in life in general, but things do slip through the cracks. Especially when I’ve been out of my mind busy. Which is very different to being ‘got your shit together’ busy. Ha!

Lately, my side of the bathroom vanity was left to suffer. I’d been rushing around a lot – doing my make-up and then running without time to tidy up after myself. I’d dumped my stuff there rather unceremoniously after we got back from our recent trip to NSW and never really sorted it out. It was a f*cking dumpsite. Very embarrassing. I have photographic proof…

It looks like something from a hoarder’s house. Or one of those ‘rental tenants from hell’ pieces on a current affairs show. And quite honestly, I thought I’d removed any truly embarrassing items from view before taking the ‘before’ photo, but I clearly missed the tiny end of a tampon wrapper. I’m sorry. I can’t believe I’m posting this. Just #keepingitreal I guess!

Also, I should note that the martini glass was not used for drinking martinis out of and then abandoned (geez – I’m not an animal). Once upon a time, I had used it as a ‘trendy’ earring holder because I saw it on Pinterest like a bajillion years ago. You can see how well that went.

Anyway, I have redeemed myself. And it only took me probably less than an hour once I’d picked up a couple of basic things from Kmart (last of the big spenders).

Here is the ‘after’ picture (to help you recover from the awful ‘before’ picture):

I am not a perfect stylist (white flecks on the counter damn it) but I think I did OK! Mr Unprepared will be stoked haha (we have that stereotypical situation where his side is all minimalistic and tidy and mine is ALWAYS a mess).

Here’s what I’ve learned…

STOP KEEPING ALL THAT SHIT YOU NEVER USE.

I cannot stress this enough. I had make up items that I knew were the wrong shade for me, did not do my skin/lips any favours (i.e. dried everything out etc), or were so old that I could vaguely remember purchasing them before my son was born!!!

I had accessories that had once been really trendy but were now decidedly daggy and hadn’t been worn since forever. There was  cheap jewellery that had discoloured or gotten tangled up beyond recognition. Odd earrings. WTF.

What freaks me out is that this stuff had actually survived multiple clean outs! I do not know what I was thinking. If you think you’ll use it one day, but those days have turned into years, it’s got to go!!

I am going to be far more mindful of what I purchase from now on. I was never a frivolous spender, but I think sometimes when you’re trying to learn about make up or what works for you, mistakes can be made. It’s all trial and error. I think I’ll learn to gift it to someone else when appropriate or just admit that it’s never going to work for me and throw it away!

Be brutal. You can find info on how long is too long to keep certain cosmetics if you do a little internet research too. Helps to have a little reality check.

Put the ‘sometimes’ items away in a caddy for easy access.

I bought a nice open caddy style container (fitting with the theme of the above containers in the ‘after’ pic) to fit all the things that aren’t used daily, but that I go to regularly. Things like extra hair ties (I’m usually a hair down kind of gal but I do up my hair around the house when working out or on hot days), bobby pins, hair removal products (haha), face masks, eye shadow pallets that only come out on special occasions and the like. Everything’s together and easy to grab now. YES.

It’s also great that this stuff is no longer cluttering up my counter space. AWESOME SAUCE.

Group ‘like’ things together so they’re easy to find.

I know you’re thinking, DUH. THIS STUFF IS SO OBVIOUS. But I really hadn’t put any of it into practice before. That’s the key – who knew that actually doing it is just as important as thinking about it haha.

I put all the make up brushes together in one tumbler thingy. I put eye, brow and lip pencils etc in another. I put lipsticks/glosses in a make up stand so I can see them easily. Skin stuff in another container. And so on.

I think this will save me so much time trying to find my every day items. It will also make it easier to tidy up afterwards. It will take me the same amount of time to tidy them up as it would have to throw them down on the bench in a rush.

Now if only I had some sort of inbuilt motivation to clean my brushes as often as I should!

Bring the space to life.

I’ve been working on activating ‘dead’ spaces around my home. I want every part of my house to feel alive and inviting. I have a long way to go, but I’ve been slowly working on it for a while now. I think that some of the more utilitarian type spaces of the house tend to get forgotten around here and they can end up making you feel flat and unexcited when you have to spend time in those areas and then they start to look progressively shabbier.

I bought me some cheapy fake succulents in cool geometric vase thingies and put them on a shelf that is usually strewn with clutter. Voila! Suddenly, I feel a teensy bit more house proud and happy when I look at them. They also serve the purpose of stopping me from mindlessly cluttering up the shelf from now on. It was a real problem spot!

Be on the look out for inspiration.

I love to get ideas from Pinterest and Instagram when I am not sure where to get started. I saw so many great ideas to draw inspiration from before I purchased some of my storage stuff for the ensuite. With so many on-trend items available at affordable prices these days (as well as great online tutorials on how to do it yourself if you’re crafty), it can be really easy to recreate your favourite looks/ideas. Just be sure to update things every now and then *cough* martini glass *cough*

So, tell me.

How’s your bathroom counter looking?

Got any amazingly spectacular/terribly awful pics to share with me?

Winter 2016: Finding my casual style.

It’s taken me a while, but I am finally getting a grasp on how to dress myself (yes I know how dumb that sounds – I’m 32). In fact, I am actually enjoying myself. I am noticing my style re-emerging after a bunch of ‘lost’ years and I am digging it! I guess I’ve had to lift my game since I became a school mum (I just won’t stop banging on about that will I?) at the beginning of this year. I’ve been trying to nail that whole casual/looks like I haven’t put in too much effort/OK to be seen in public look! I wanted to start feeling like a grown up, but the kind of grown up I feel comfortable being. Which means the ripped jeans and silly tees and ever so subtle rock and roll feel totally get to stay!

I’ve learned a lot this winter and found inspiration in the people around me and on the internet. I haven’t had to spend a lot – I’m learning it’s all how you put it together!

Here’s the stuff I’m loving…

Ripped skinny jeans

61ff5f971667b2371d472659c9b7d783

SOURCE

I will scour every sale table for a pair of ripped size 12s (they are so hard to find)! I have a pair in black and a pair in denim blue. They are great for being comfy in a hoody with or for pairing with cool T-shirts, plaid button up shirts, and jackets. I love how the ripped effect gives my outfits a little bit of edge and because I’m feeling that my legs are a bit chunky (and short), I love how the rips kind of break up the big blocks of denim.

You can dress them up and down – so versatile!

I used to be scared of jeans because of the constant muffin top situation, but they make them stretchier now (slightly higher rise ones are the best) and I think I’ve finally got the sizing right (don’t always listen when the sales assistant tells you to go down a size to allow for wearing them in)! There are also really clever ways to layer and hide the ‘bloop’ around the waistline – especially in winter!

Footwear: pairing those ripped jeans with sneaks and ankle boots and (wait for it) open toed wedges!

I don’t know what rock I’ve been hiding under, but I only just learned about the ‘rolling the hem of your jeans up’ trend this winter. Not only does it weirdly lengthen your leg (something to do with the showing of some ankle bones – sexy) but it helps you to wear almost any footwear with them too!

Great for a shorty like me!

I love cute little Converse style sneakers for a really casual look and I love ankle boots for a bit of warmth and dressed up style.

SOURCE

I have black boots myself, but you get the idea! Ankle boots are everywhere at the moment so it’s really easy to find an affordable pair that suits your look!

Here’s the surprise revelation I’ve just made…here in WA, we get a lot of sunny winter days. I don’t know why but I’ve always had this stupid fear of being shamed for wearing open toed shoes in winter (there’s always that bitch that says “aren’t you cold in that” implying all kinds of whorish things). Yet there are days where I could totally justify it! If the ground is dry and the sun is out and you are the kind of person who doesn’t care if their feet are a little open to the cool breeze, then why the hell not? I have made the resolution to stop neglecting my wedges this winter and get adventurous (even us short/stubby leg people can go strap happy when pairing with jeans)! Well… maybe when I get a pedicure (it’s not looking pretty right now)!

Tees

SOURCE

I love a good tee. For me, the requirements are that it must be juuuust baggy enough that it hides some muffin top (but not so baggy you end up looking bigger), a good quality fabric that can be washed forever because you love it so much, and those cute slightly rolled up sleeves. I pick greys, patterns and dark colours – the best for flattering a slightly bumpy mid section!

If they have cool (or funny or ironic or kitsch) stuff on them, I don’t mind either!

Bright scarves

SOURCE

I often find myself wearing a lot of monochrome and neutrals in winter. It just seems easier, I guess. I like to brighten things up with a pop of colour around the neck! Scarves are great for keeping you warm, they hide the double chins, and they even disguise a bad hair day a bit! Yay!

Black puffer jacket

SOURCE

I love my black puffer. It’s longer than the one pictured here, but it’s great. It will go over any casual outfit and offers an extra layer of much needed warmth! It’s so easy and comfy!

There are so many styles, shapes and prices – there’s one for everyone out there!

Now I want to go shopping more – oops haha.

How would you describe your winter style? What stuff are you wearing the hell out of?

Surprise! It’s Autumn!

DSCF1571

image

I know, right? How did that happen?? It was summer a second ago! Has it really been that long already? Where does time go? I’m not done frolicking at the beach. COME BACK, SUMMER.

This happens to me every year. It’s not that I don’t love autumn. I just wish it wouldn’t sneak up on me all the time. I guess that’s how famous people probably feel about Ellen Degeneres. If you do not understand this reference, shame on you…for probably having a life…that doesn’t involve a love affair with a DVR…and Ellen.

NO. I AM NOT HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH ELLEN. SPEAK TO MY PUBLICIST.

I don’t have a publicist.

Um…where was I?

Yes. Autumn. I love Autumn. My birthday is in Autumn. Easter is in Autumn. Some of my fondest memories come with the sounds, smells and weather of Autumn embedded in them.

My problem is that I am just never ready for it. Ever. You’d think I’d learn, right? Nope. Slow learner right here.

My biggest downfall is my inability to plan my autumn/winter wardrobe. See, the clothes appear in the shops at the hottest time of the year (which is coincidentally usually right before Autumn begins). So I look at that stuff and say, “Pffft. As if I can think of leggings and jackets and scarves right now. You’ve got to be joking!”

The weather in my corner of the world isn’t quite cold yet, but Autumn is in the air. We’ve had some rain, the days feel more mellow and they are getting shorter. So I’m feeling awkward as f*ck, because soon I am going to be that girl who is so obviously wearing her summer clothes for too long, because she doesn’t know what else to do. We’ve all seen that girl before. She’s the same girl who gets too excited for summer and wears shorts too early and everyone is all like, yo, settle down. Y’know? Yep. That’s me.

The only time I feel I nailed Autumn was when I was pregnant with the Little Mister in 2011. Because, hello, when you have a baby bump you can wear anything and no-one thinks you’re fat or falsely accuses you of being pregnant. It’s like the perfect accessory. So fashion tip: be pregnant.

Um…as that is not an option right now, I am SCREWED. I have not done a THING towards preparing a cooler weather wardrobe. NOT A THING. All i have is some worn out tights, some worn out boots and a couple of hoodies – the kind that say you’ve given up on yourself and have nothing else to wear. Oops.

Besides vowing to watch Rosie Rockets’ blog very closely for ideas (no pressure haha), I really haven’t made a plan. All I know is that I’d like to somehow incorporate these things that I thought of in my brain and then found on Pinterest for illustration…

Oversized flannel shirt/dress.

81d231330902481593fa1a6102c056fc

This is my kinda thing. It’s easy. It can be worn with comfy leggings. It doesn’t involve 50 layers of clothing (layers make this 5 foot tall shortie feel like I’m drowning in fabric). It flatters a few extra curves if you’re carrying them (guilty!). It can be dressed up a little or kept really simple. It’s almost an outfit in itself so there’s no crazy decision making every single morning. Get me one in every kind of plaid! Stat!

Burgundy lips.

9b07dccf94a2725a3d88f8b9d0501999

Something about cooler, greyer weather just makes me want to bring out the darker hues. Strong, warm, matte colours. I love lipstick because it’s a quick way to make yourself look (and more importantly feel) polished, like you’ve made an effort. I kind of let my lipstick wearing slip through the summer and I think that I really need to bring it back. When I’ve got my lippie on I feel so much more sexy and confident. I wouldn’t be surprised if I even carry myself a bit differently (disclaimer: still a klutz forever though). Watch out, world!

Dark nails.

b3b281e75a4d42e0aa357865d6d7802d

Gotta match my lips, of course! These hands look a bit over photo shopped, though. Kind of like they’re dead. Let’s ignore that. Gotta love Pinterest haha.

Boots.

I need boots. To be honest, I do not know where to start. I want black ones. But I’m short and I have short legs so I have to wear a lot of the shorter ankle styled ones over dark tights to keep things flattering. And while I like the ones with heels, I also need to be practical and have some flatter ones or wedges maybe. I don’t want old ‘mum’ boots. I want cool boots. Very ‘now’ ones. Maybe something with a bit of an edge. BUT WHAT IS ‘NOW’?! I feel a bit out of touch. How sad! Suggestions? Links? Pics? Maybe I can get some inspiration in Sydney next month…

Told you I’m crap at Autumn/Winter!!

Let’s just fantasise about these impractical beauties for a second, though…that’s just shoe porn right there.

*drools*

Biker jacket.

c5a5c96a78f365f4d677db91a83974bd

I have had incarnations of this before, but I’ve just never quite nailed it. I am looking for something that I can wear, but that doesn’t wear me! See? This model is wearing the jacket. When I put a jacket of any description on, I feel all bulky and lost in it. Like it never quite sits right. It wears me. I know The One is out there somewhere waiting for me. I must search harder this year!!

Are you ever ready for Autumn? What staples will you be wearing this season?

Lady cave.

DeathtoStock_CreativeSpace1

image

No, it’s not a euphemism (giggles immaturely). Just like men like to have man caves, I have decided that I need a lady cave. I have a place for it all picked out. Sure, it won’t be perfect, because we have to keep the ironing board and unsorted washing and the bills somewhere, but hey – Mr Unprepared won’t be getting a shed as big as he’d like for the time being so I guess it’s only fair 😉

Yep. I am going to be making over the study. It will be my little sanctuary, where I can blog and look at pretty things and pretend I belong on fancy websites and do very important ‘unspecified as yet’ creative ‘work’. It will be a light, bright space that makes me feel happy and serene and not at all stabby like it does now. It will have to be functional, but almost 31 years into my life I am finally realising that the home office is actually allowed to be ridiculously good looking just like the rest of the house (which admittedly needs a little work too but nothing is as bad as the study is right now haha). I always thought that a study needed to  be the soulless room in the house and have ugly, horrendously designed generic furniture. Bulky stuff. Fugly – to keep all the fugly paperwork in. That it’s just a place to be practical. The one room that doesn’t need any prettying up. Because it’s supposed to be all utilitarian. Like an actual office. Think of the ugliest accountant’s office you’ve ever been in. Like that. I don’t know why. Now that I think about it, WHAT WAS WRONG WITH ME? Why was I punishing myself?? WHO AM I??

But then Pinterest was invented. And I started reading some great blogs, with pretty pictures from people’s lives. Now I have myself believing that there’s no reason I can’t enjoy that space and feel productive in it at the same time. I want to make it inviting and peaceful. So beautiful that no-one would ever dare to chuck old paid bills and clutter all over the place out of fear of ruining the wonderful vibe of it all (Ha ha ha – shut up).

Here’s what I’ve been drooling over…

5b6cb9c12550918f9fe287046dabd29e

All I want is a little white desk. I don’t need heaps of work space! Some space for my laptop and some artistically arranged stationery. Nothing crazy. Just something to replace the massive, inflexible corner desk that takes up so much more room than is needed! The space would look instantly bigger.

f928c7b96fbf0ecc03cb16f72d46e8a9

Floating shelves. White of course. Storage is definitely a challenge in our study, so we can’t just ditch all the shelf space. However, I would happily ditch all of the bulky book cases that are lined up against one wall. Floating shelves would again offer the illusion of more space, but would happily accommodate our important books and photo albums. I think it would also force me to really think about what I really need vs what I keep thinking I might need one day (notebook hoarder over here – HOLLA!).

dce6902945bbda2b41c41bef6ee8ae61

I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t want some inspirational wall prints. A pop of colour. Sure, I’d have to get creative in how to display my degree, the wedding certificate and Mr Unprepared’s trade certificates, but where there’s a will, there’s a way, right?

1e11041670dd8755719ff7d0085aa024

And isn’t this desk chair divine? I want colour! And shape! Style. Comfort. I love that it’s not huge and foreboding like the big chair we have in there now. The one that looks like an evil movie villain will spin around in it at any moment, stroking a white, fluffy cat. The chair we have kind of dominates the room – drives me crazy. We bought it originally because it had a lot of back support and felt it was important because I would be studying for so long at a time in it. We figured, the higher the better. Except I am only five foot tall when I’m standing. Hilarious. I question my old decisions more and more!

Of course I’d need a simple filing cabinet and maybe a drawer or two near the desk for extra stationery, but I think it’s all quite doable.

I also dream of a gorgeous desk top computer – Apple of course (gotta add to my collection of matching devices) – but maybe that can wait a little while. In fact, all of it must wait a little while. But I can get started clearing the junk (it’s like an episode of Hoarders in there – you won’t believe that I found two CAR WING MIRRORS in there for WHO KNOWS WHAT KIND OF CAR… AND MORE – WTF Mr Unprepared?!), one piece of ugly office furniture at a time. It will be my ongoing project. Also, if anyone wants cables for anything. Anything that is not manufactured anymore or compatible with anything made this century, just give me a yell.

YAY FOR NO MORE UGLY HOME OFFICES…EVENTUALLY! 🙂

What would your lady (or your lady’s) cave be/look like? x

Inspiration: Living a more authentic life.

Sometimes I like to seek out inspirational quotes that make me feel like I can do this whole life thing. Stuff I can meditate on. And by meditate, I mean think about and reflect on. Not actually meditate. Because I am crap at actual meditation, even though I know I should do it more because it does work. Hmm…maybe I should find some inspirational quotes about meditation. That might help.

But today is not that day (sorry Mum).

Today I have put together a handful of quotes (found on Pinterest) around the theme of living more authentically. I think that living a life where we’re really honest with ourselves and others, is the best way to achieve inner peace and lessen the constant mental turmoil.

Here they are. I think I will let them speak for themselves (I won’t add my own personal notes this time because I think these kinds of things can be quite personal and I’d love for you to find your own meaning for them):

Making change in our lives can be scary and intimidating. It can mean jumping into the unknown (or the relatively unknown). We often have to take some kind of risk in order to reach our goals. Moving to a new town/city, taking a new job, changing your lifestyle, making that big investment. Turning up at those events where we do not know anyone. Sometimes when we know that it’s the ‘right’ thing to do for us, we just have to let go and jump right in. The worst thing we can do is never take any risks at all, because of fear. Sometimes getting out of that rut or that well worn comfort zone can be exhilarating and open us up to new experiences which will enrich our lives. Sometimes we really truly know deep down that we need to do something a bit scary in order to grow and strengthen our character. It can be something huge or it can just be as simple as talking yourself into driving somewhere you’ve never been on your own (instead of making an excuse not to go) or striking up a conversation with someone you’ve never met before. Gotta find that courage!

I think that sometimes we live life on auto-pilot and the result we want is not reflected in our actions. I try to stay really conscious of whether my actions and thoughts reflect the changes I want to make in my life. You’d be surprised how often we can catch ourselves doing the same thing we’ve always done, but just praying it will all miraculously turn out differently somehow! Remember that little saying about the definition of insanity…?

People will always have an opinion. Some people speak from direct experience, but sometimes people are quick to tell you that the decisions you make go against THEIR principles. They might even go as far as worrying loudly about you, because you haven’t chosen the same way they would have (even though you’re really happy with what you’ve decided). Unless they are the ones who live with the results, should they really have a say? You know best what your desires, passions, dreams, and aspirations are. You also know better than anyone how your decisions will affect those closest to you. YOU will have to live with the outcomes of your decisions, so YOU need to be comfortable with them. There’s no point being uncomfortable because you’re scared of what somebody else (who is removed from it) thinks.

7d39a59fae60c826124ee7a98b3fa8abimage

Sometimes we are asked to decide things. Tough things. But when we ask ourselves what we value more – what we’ll look back on our life and be glad about – it becomes really clear what we need to do. Do you value family, relationships, career, money, happiness etc etc? What is more important when some of these things are at odds with each other? Hey presto – there’s your answer. I am not saying that executing those decisions is simple and easy, but knowing what you need to do can be if you stay true to yourself and maintain your integrity.

~~~
I hope that whatever decisions you face today, you are able to do what is best for you 🙂
Thanks for reading! x
Beginning.
This post has been inspired by Fat Mum Slim’s Photo a Day challenge.
Here are some inspirational bits and pieces I’ve found online with the theme of ‘beginning’, and some of my accompanying thoughts x
How I feel about the Little Mister. His joy for life is so contagious.
 Something I wish everyone (including myself) could realise. It can take a crapload of courage but often it can be quite rewarding at best and character building at worst!
Oh yeah. For me, right now it’s how I feel about beginning a new, healthier life routine. It doesn’t come completely naturally just yet, but I’m going to get there. Just gotta keep on learning and doing. Which brings me to this…
This is one of my favourite little personal mantras. It’s never too late to do better. The worst thing I can do is derail my progress at something because of one bad day (or even week or month). Just gotta keep on believing that every thing I do each new day makes a difference. This is especially true when I skip a day of exercise or eating right. Gotta jump back on that wagon tomorrow – not next week or never. Hey, it’s even been true of this photo a day challenge for September! I’ve skipped some days, I’ve forgotten some days, I’ve been too tired or unmotivated some days, but I’ve been determined to not give it up completely. Ultimately, it’s been so great for getting my creativity flowing and it has even introduced me to wonderful new readers and bloggers I might not have known about otherwise.
Whatever they might be.
Do you have any new beginnings (big or small) to celebrate? x
Stuff to love this spring.
I don’t know about where you are in the world, but over here I have been thoroughly enjoying amazing bursts of winter sunshine. Gosh, I love that Vitamin D. I actually wake up giddy when I see the sun out. I don’t know if this is all one big tease before the rains come back or if it’s truly the beginning of an early spring, but it is beautiful. It has got me so excited and inspired. I don’t want to see grey and black anymore!
Here are some of the things I am excited about for this spring/summer:
Neon coloured nails:
Pinterest
I used to think that neon was kind of tacky, but when applied on well shaped nails in block colours? Divine! I can have a bit of youth on my fingernails without looking ridiculous (can anyone say mutton dressed as lamb?) and I can’t wait to buy ALL THE COLOURS.
Bright lips:
I always love a good red lip, but I’m really into the idea of trying some pink and orange hues. A bold lip is really in right now and I love that everyone is getting adventurous. While the models pictured above are blonde and well…modelly and I am not, I would love to find the right  shades of pink and orange for my warm skin tone. I love the way a bright lip always makes me feel confident and polished. Like I’ve finished my look. It dresses you up instantly. Also, lipstick doesn’t care how big you are (and let’s face it I am carrying a few extra kilos – oops). It will always fit and make you feel great!
Gorgeous sandals/flats:
Galibelle
I am in love with the Galibelle brand right now and I just ordered the sandals above! The cool thing? Those straps with the beautiful butterfly like design are all detachable and swappable! I am so stoked because I am going to be wearing all three colours (plus a black one) this coming summer! I love that I can swap the straps to match my outfits. Also? The straps come in small, medium and large which is amazing news for my broad feet (I’m a medium FYI). Some dear friends have brought the brand (which is Brazilian) to Australia and you can find out more on their Facebook page. These are seriously heaven sent because I can never find summer sandals that are both attractive and fit my short, broad feet (because of the designs I imagine they would be just as heavenly for a slim footed person too – magic). I am not being paid or sponsored in any way to promote this (and have not been approached), but I genuinely am in love. Usually I hate when friends try to sell me stuff but this is not one of those times. You do not know how long I have been wearing ugly sandals because that was all I could get. We’re talking YEARS. YEARS! It shouldn’t be that hard, shoe makers. It really shouldn’t. I am beyond excited.
Not wearing stockings/tights/sleeves/jackets if I don’t want to:
Seriously. I want to go out and not feel like a freak because my legs are bare (in clothing of an appropriate and tasteful length of course haha) or I don’t have a jacket on. If there’s anything that annoys me, it’s winter clothing. I’m not a winter person. I do not do winter clothing. I feel frumpy in too many layers (I think my height and my current weight do not help my cause). I feel like jackets/blazers etc never fit me quite right (I have narrow shoulders but I’m bigger everywhere else and sleeves are always too voluminous or long). I hate trousers, because of muffin top (and yes I have tried every kind of style and taken every piece of anti-muffin top advice and it still doesn’t seem right – except for ONE pair of pants from Target that I daren’t ever wreck). I wreck stockings and tights constantly, despite having worn them successfully all throughout high school. Oh, and most of my shoes are peep toes and while I know that they sell tights with no toes just for that reason, I am never convinced I can pull them off.
I also loathe the passive aggressive comment, “Aren’t you cold in that outfit?”
I’m always, “What? What are you saying? Are you saying I’m slutty because I’m not cold? Are you saying I’ve made a very bad decision?”
*head explodes thus keeping me warm*
So I do look forward to leaving home in nothing but the one layer of clothing. Legs out, just doing the whole walking around thing.
Play time:
I just love the fun that can be had in the sunshine. I look forward to beach time, playground adventures around the neighbourhood, long family walks, and checking out the local markets on the foreshore on a Sunday. Sitting out in the backyard having a quiet beer/cider, listening to music and watching the Little Mister play. I can’t wait until it becomes more of a regular thing 🙂
What are you looking forward to this spring? x
Tuesday thoughts.
I’ve decided I need a hit of inspiration to keep me going this week. Here are the things I am going to focus on…
Sometimes in life we are forced to wait for the things we’d like and just like anything else in life we have a choice to handle it with positivity and grace or we can just be miserable about it and throw our hands up in the air and be shitty about it (making those around us miserable too)! It is what it is, so we might as well find a way to enjoy life in the meantime, see the bright side or even just learn something from it. We are only wasting our own lives if we choose to spend the time waiting being negative, angry or increasingly agitated. If you think about it, we spend a lot of time waiting in lines, waiting on public transport, waiting in peak hour traffic, waiting for someone to call back, waiting for that next great purchase, waiting on someone else, waiting, waiting, waiting! It’s a part of life, because the world doesn’t revolve around me, and I choose to spend it being happy (or at least not an a**hole).
There’s a saying that ‘there’s more than one way to skin a cat’ and while that’s a horrendous saying (am I right?), it basically means that there is always more than one way to do something or to solve a problem. Our way is not the only way and we needn’t despair if something we try doesn’t work out right away. Perhaps someone else might have a great solution we’ve never thought of before. Sometimes being open minded and having a little bit of respect, tact and sensitivity with others can go a long way in achieving what we want to achieve. You never know just how refreshing another person’s approach might be. It’s good to remember where another person is coming from in a situation. It can prove very helpful when dealing with others. Don’t be too quick to write off somebody else’s perspective. You never know what they might be able to bring to the table.
It’s so important to look for the good in the people we care about. It can be easy to get bogged down in our own concerns and feelings, but sometimes it can really make another person’s day if we pay them a compliment and really notice and appreciate their strengths. It can really enrich any kind of relationship.
Sometimes we focus so much on the superficial that we forget about what’s really important. We need to stop comparing ourselves to others who appear to have it all and start appreciating what we have. It’s not about always thinking the grass is greener on the other side. Maybe the grass on the other side has just been spray painted green – we’ll never be able to get close enough to see the truth, because it’s not our grass and it’s aaaalll the way over there. That’s someone else’s grass, man. Maybe it’s time to make your own grass as green as you can. For real. Water that shit and make it grow into something you can appreciate for yourself, not just for how it looks to everyone else. All that stuff about not comparing your life to someone’s highlight reel yada yada.
To me, a person isn’t just who they think they are. Who I am is what I do and what I say to people. My actions. Just because I appreciate someone or love someone inside my head, does not mean I am showing it to them or making them feel appreciated or loved. Over time, it’s those actions that really prove who the real person is. Gotta make those things work together so they translate to those around me.It’s so important to be as authentic as we can be. To say what we mean and SHOW how we feel. To use our words wisely and sincerely.
Hope you have a great week, full of positive inspiration xx
Thought sorting.
I’ve had a lot on my mind recently. Sorting out thoughts. Figuring stuff out. Here are some quotes that are inspiring me or making me think.
I need to remember that I am not responsible for these people’s storms. I do not need to be their umbrella all of the time (even if they want me to be or even if I feel compassion for them).
Sometimes I get overwhelmed when there’s a big life milestone or some dream I’m trying to turn into reality. For me, at the moment, it is definitely the trip to Korea and Japan that is getting all too real! I have found myself with seemingly never ending to-do lists, the scary task of packing (why is it scary? I just have this irrational fear of not taking the perfect items with me) and the emotions that may come with visiting the country I was born in (but have never been to). I need to remember to calm the f*ck down and remember it’s all a ridiculous adventure – something that is once in a lifetime. Just do it.
Yes. Yes. Yes. I don’t want to stand outside of my own life constantly trying to figure out how I fit in or whether I am worthy. That’s no way to live your life. I want to be the star of my own life. Secure and rooted (haha ‘rooted’ – someone’s been watching too many Puberty Blues episodes) in my own story. Too many of us spend our lives reacting off our own insecurities and fears, instead of owning our destinies. Walking this world with confidence – living our truth.
We can’t control the behaviour of others, but we can control how we conduct ourselves. I hope I can live a life where I take responsibility for my choices and even if nothing goes to plan or other people/circumstances try to thwart me or make me feel bad for doing what’s best for me, I will be able to sleep at night knowing I did the right things for me and those I care about.
I never want to lose my sense of fun and adventure. I want to find joy in life, wherever it is to be found. There are positives to be discovered in even the most seemingly mundane parts of our every day lives. Sometimes joy can be found just trying something new. Eating something you’ve never tasted before or seeing a movie you didn’t think you would like. Some things work out better than others, but I want to keep surprising myself. I would rather say I gave something a go and embraced the experience, than to wonder what would have happened if I’d done it…or to set myself up for disappointment with a negative attitude going in.
So what’s inspiring you today? x
